Why law firms cannot hit the proverbial Social Media Ball out of the park.

“A fundamental aspect of social media is missing for most law firms and prevents them from playing in the big league: Social media is not just a marketing channel, it’s a communication ecosystem. If the law firm entity is not willing to accept (or respond to) comments or discussion on their blogs, Facebook page or Twitter stream it is equivalent to the dreaded “no comment” in journalism.

Why is it so rare that we see a law firm inject ‘conversation’ into their social media accounts, preferring to simply “post” or “push” corporate messages? Because by allowing conversation they can’t control the message. And that is, in my experience, a legitimate need, but it is not a need that can satisfied at face value when playing the social media ball game.

I believe that until law firms face the realities that their corporate cousins face daily, being subjected to the opportunities, and perils, of social conversation, they will not, in the true spirit of social media, ever hit it out of the park.”

Maybe it shouldn’t be all that important. Maybe the law firm blogs, YouTube videos, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts are just marketing, and not a destination for meaningful business communications?  You might argue that the time you devote to these sites is not paying off, or that law firms are not “product” to be sold in the mass marketplace. Fair enough. But, at Law Gravity, well, we’re not inclined to accept that. We inject imagination and vision. We don’t want to enable our clients to settle for anything less than the best. We believe that any entity, B2B or B2C must first understand the playing field, know the rules, get good coaching and practice hitting, catching, pitching and running. We want to inspire our clients to spend the time moving relationships forward using ALL the tools available today, to be contemporary to the marketplace without sacrificing professionalism and privacy. It can be done.
